They examined actual airplanes in detail at five museums in North America and looked at the original blueprints. History : The F4U-1 is the first operational version of the famous American fighter Corsair. He was the first American fighter capable of reaching a speed of 400mph (644km / h). The F4U-1 version was characterized by its frame canopy which earned it the nickname "Birdcage". Before' being replaced by upgraded versions, the F4U-1 operated in the Pacific from land bases from February 1943 to mid-1944. It proved superior to Zero in many areas, exploiting its high speed in close combat to counter the maneuverability of the Japanese hunter. It is on an F4U-1 that the famous Major Gregory "Papy" Boyington and many other aces of the US Navy and the Marine Corps have distinguished themselves. The F4U-1 is one of the main instruments of the Allied victory in the central part of the Solomon Islands (Guadalcanal) which initiated the long reconquest of the Pacific until the surrender of Japan.
